Searches for Character AI alternatives jumped this autumn, and it’s easy to see why. Character.AI still blocks adult content on every plan, it now asks some adults to prove their age with a selfie, the best memory features moved behind a subscription, and in October the company filed for Chapter 11 to sell itself. If you built months of stories there, you’re probably wondering where to take them next. We read Character.AI’s own help center, blog and court notice, then went through the plan pages and content rules of the Character AI alternatives people move to most, so you can see what each one allows, how much it remembers and what it costs in November 2026.
This guide is about switching. If you just want the full list of adult chat platforms, our roundup of NSFW AI chat apps goes deeper on each one.
Quick Picks: Character AI Alternatives by What You Need
Closest overall swap: SpicyChat. A huge library of community characters, adult roleplay allowed on the free tier, paid plans from $5.95/mo
Best free long roleplay: Janitor AI. Unlimited free chat on its own model with about 8K to 9K tokens of context; janitor+ is $12.99/mo
Biggest catalog: CrushOn AI. NSFW on its free models, 16K memory from $5.99/mo
Full control, free software: SillyTavern. A free, open-source frontend you run yourself with a local or rented model
One long-term companion: Kindroid or Nomi. Adult text allowed and strong memory, but both are built around one relationship, not a character library
Still filtered: Chai and Talkie. They’re popular Character.AI swaps, but neither is a clear adult-roleplay home
Why People Are Looking for Character AI Alternatives
The Filter Isn’t Going Anywhere
Character.AI’s community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and its terms ban anything “obscene or pornographic.” Its help center goes further: the company “does not and will not support” pornographic content, and asking for the filter to be removed “will result in a ban.” The filter checks both your messages and the model’s replies. Adults get less conservative classifiers than teens, but there’s no adult mode. Neither c.ai+ nor any chat style turns it off.
Under-18 Chat Is Gone, and Adults Get Age Checks
Character.AI removed open-ended chat for users under 18 as of November 25, 2025, and replaced it with Stories and other guided features. Every account now goes through age assurance. Most adults pass quietly based on account signals, but if the system thinks you’re under 18, you’re moved into a reading mode with no chat until you pass a selfie check through Persona, and in some cases an ID upload. Plenty of adults who got flagged have decided they’d rather move than send a selfie.
Memory Now Has Tiers
Character.AI’s May 2026 memory update gave every user Story Memory and pinned messages: 15 pins on free, 30 on paid. The automatic Facts feature, the detailed Memory Usage view and advanced Lorebooks are c.ai+ only. Character.AI also doesn’t publish a context window in tokens, so you can’t compare it directly with apps that do.
The Company Is Up for Sale
Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. Disney is the lead (”stalking horse”) bidder with a $20 million offer for certain assets. Bids are due November 24, the auction is set for December 1 and the sale hearing for December 3–4, 2026. Character.AI says that if no workable bid comes in, “the platform will be wound down.” Subscriptions are reported to keep billing as normal for now, but nobody knows what a buyer will keep.
What Character.AI Allows and Costs Right Now
Free: unlimited messages on the basic chat styles (PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak, with PipSqueak 2 and Rawr in a Legacy menu), full ads, slow mode at busy times and basic memory
c.ai lite: from $4.99/mo in the US, with a daily taste of the premium DeepSqueak and LongSqueak styles, fewer ads and 30 pins
c.ai+: $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr in the US. Unlimited premium styles, no ads, no slow mode and the full memory suite
Adult content: blocked on every plan. Romance and fade-to-black scenes are where it stops, and repeated attempts can get accounts suspended
Character.AI sets prices by region, so the checkout price in your country may differ.
How We Researched These Character AI Alternatives
We don’t publish chat logs we didn’t have or claim sessions we didn’t run. For this guide we:
Read Character.AI’s help center, blog posts, terms, community guidelines and Chapter 11 notice
Read each alternative’s own pricing pages, plan tables, help docs and content rules through early November 2026, plus app store listings where prices sit behind a login
Cross-checked limits against independent price trackers and user reports, keeping only details that came from the company or showed up in more than one place
Prices and limits change often in this category. Treat this as a November 2026 snapshot and check the plan page before you pay.
The Best Character AI Alternatives for Adult Roleplay
SpicyChat: The Closest Swap
Why switchers pick it: It feels the most like Character.AI. It’s a big library of community-made characters (its download page advertises more than 300,000), with group chats and personas, and adult roleplay is allowed for free users.
Free: 4,096 tokens of context, 180-token replies, ads and queues at busy times
Get A Taste: $5.95/mo or $60/yr. No ads and the Memory Manager, but the same 4K context
True Supporter: $19.95/mo or $199.95/yr. 8K context, 300-token replies and Semantic Memory
I’m All In: $29.95/mo or $299.95/yr. Up to 32K context depending on the model
The catch: “Uncensored” still has rules. SpicyChat bans minors, non-consent even in fiction, and all family and step-family roleplay. There’s no iOS app, so iPhone users go through the website. Age checks lock NSFW in some regions, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states.
Janitor AI: Best Free Option for Long Stories
Why switchers pick it: Free, unlimited text roleplay on JanitorLLM, with roughly double SpicyChat’s free context and no ads.
Free: unlimited chats on JanitorLLM, about 8K to 9K tokens of context
janitor+: $12.99/mo or $99/yr. About five times the free context, priority replies and monthly swipes on stronger models
Bring your own key: connect a provider such as OpenRouter and pay them directly
The catch: It’s text only, and explicit images are banned. The iOS and Android apps start in Safe Mode, and you have to switch NSFW on from the website settings. Janitor’s own changelog has logged outages and slowdowns through 2026.
CrushOn AI: Biggest Catalog With Paid Memory
Why switchers pick it: A very large character catalog, NSFW allowed on the free models, and memory upgrades that are clearly listed.
Free: unlimited chat on the slower free models, 100 message credits a month for Pro models, 8K context
Standard: $5.99/mo or $58.88/yr, with 16K memory models
Premium: $14.99/mo or $94.88/yr. More credits, still 16K
Elite and Imperial: $89.99 and $199.99/mo, with 24K memory
The catch: Credits. The better models spend them, so “unlimited” only applies to the free models. You may also hit an 18+ check.
SillyTavern: The Free Do-It-Yourself Route
Why switchers pick it: SillyTavern is free, open-source software, not a hosted service. You install it on your own computer and connect it to a model, either one running locally through a backend such as KoboldCpp or a paid API you choose. Your chats and character cards live in files on your own machine, and nobody can shut the platform down.
Cost: the software is free. You pay only for hardware or whatever API you connect
Memory: depends entirely on the model and settings you pick, plus built-in tools like lorebooks
Content: set by the model you run and the provider’s terms, not by SillyTavern
The catch: Setup takes real effort, and running good local models needs a capable GPU. Third-party browser extensions such as CAI Tools are commonly used to export Character.AI bots as character cards. They aren’t official, so read what any extension can access before you install it.
Kindroid and Nomi: For One Companion, Not a Library
These are companion apps, not character hubs, but switchers who mostly talked to one character often prefer them.
Kindroid: adult text roleplay is allowed on every platform, and its long-term memory is a big selling point. The free plan ended October 1, 2026. New accounts get a one-time preview of about 50 messages, then need a subscription. The last published web prices were $13.99/mo or $139.99/yr ($15.99/mo in the app stores), and Kindroid now says to check the price at checkout.
Nomi: chat is unfiltered, but images stay clothed. The free plan gives 50 messages a day. Standard is $15.99/mo or $99.99/yr on the US App Store.
Character AI Alternatives That Still Filter Adult Content
Some of the most recommended swaps won’t fix the problem you’re leaving over:
Chai: its rules contradict each other. The EULA allows “adult-oriented content” in fictional roleplay, but its Safety Center says the models refuse sexually explicit content. The iOS app has been missing from the App Store since around October 22, 2026, though Android and the separate web app at chai-ai.com still work. App Store pricing was last seen at $13.99/mo for Premium and $29.99/mo for Ultra; web Pro is about $9.99/wk or $159.99/yr.
Talkie: its FAQ says “pornographic and violent content are prohibited,” and its guidelines ban suggestive content too. Talkie+ is $9.99/mo, with Pro at $24.99/mo, and longer memory is a paid perk. Its terms also allow users from age 14.
Side-by-Side: Free vs Paid on Each Alternative
Character.AI: free unlimited chat; no adult content on any plan; c.ai lite $4.99/mo, c.ai+ $9.99/mo; context not published
SpicyChat: adult roleplay free; 4K free context; 8K from $19.95/mo, up to 32K at $29.95/mo
Janitor AI: adult text free on web; about 8K to 9K free; janitor+ $12.99/mo for about five times that
CrushOn AI: NSFW on free models; 8K free; 16K from $5.99/mo, 24K on top tiers
SillyTavern: free software; content and memory depend on the model you connect
Kindroid: adult text allowed; no free plan, only a 50-message preview; from $13.99/mo on the web
Nomi: unfiltered text; 50 free messages a day; $15.99/mo or $99.99/yr
Chai / Talkie: filtered or unclear; not a reliable home for adult roleplay
Memory Compared: Who Remembers Your Story
Memory is the second big reason people leave, after the filter. Context is how much of the chat the model can see at once. Around 4K tokens is roughly the last 20 messages plus the character card. Long roleplay feels much better at 8K, and noticeably better again at 16K or more.
SpicyChat: 4K free and on Get A Taste, 8K on True Supporter, up to 32K on I’m All In
Janitor AI: about 8K to 9K free, about five times that on janitor+
CrushOn AI: 8K free, 16K on Standard and Premium, 24K on Elite and Imperial
Character.AI: no token figure published. It uses memory layers instead (Story Memory, pins, and Facts on c.ai+)
Memory features matter too. SpicyChat’s Semantic Memory and Character.AI’s Facts both save key details after older messages drop out of the window.
How to Move Your Characters Off Character.AI
Request your data export. On the web, go to Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data. On mobile, it’s under Settings → Legal & Privacy. Character.AI says it can take 3 to 4 weeks, and the download link expires after 7 days, so watch your inbox.
Copy your character definitions by hand now. Copy greetings, personas and the lines that matter into a text file. Most alternatives accept a name, a description, an example dialogue and a first message.
Rebuild on the new platform. Paste the definition, add your key story facts to its memory tool, and give it a short summary of where the story was.
Cancel c.ai+ where you subscribed. That’s either the App Store, Google Play or the web. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
Privacy When You Switch
Every hosted alternative stores your chats on its servers. Use a separate email and leave out your full name, address and workplace.
Age checks vary. Some use a selfie, an ID or a small card charge, and some just ask for your date of birth. Read what the check keeps before you agree.
Read the training and retention rules before you move years of chats. Our guide to AI girlfriend app privacy compares them app by app.
18+ only. Every platform here bans minors and minor-coded characters, and most close accounts permanently for it.
Character AI Alternatives FAQ
Does Character.AI Allow NSFW in 2026?
No. Its guidelines and terms ban pornographic and obscene content for every user, including adults and c.ai+ subscribers, and the company says asking to remove the filter can get you banned.
What Is the Best Free Character AI Alternative?
For adult text roleplay, Janitor AI is the best free pick for long stories, and SpicyChat is the closest in feel, with adult roleplay on its free tier. For more free options with daily caps listed, see our guide to free AI girlfriend apps.
Can I Import My Character.AI Chats Into Another App?
There’s no official one-click transfer. You can request Character.AI’s data export and copy your character definitions by hand. SillyTavern users often use third-party extensions to save bots as character cards.
Will Character.AI Shut Down?
Not necessarily. It’s in a court-supervised sale, with an auction on December 1, 2026. Character.AI says it hopes a buyer keeps the platform running, but it will be wound down if no workable bid comes in. Back up anything you care about now.
Why Does Character.AI Ask for a Selfie?
If its age-assurance system thinks you might be under 18, you’re moved into the under-18 experience. Passing Persona’s selfie check, or an ID check as a last step, restores chat.
Final Verdict on Character AI Alternatives
If you’re leaving over the filter, SpicyChat is the closest swap, with free adult roleplay and a big character library. Its memory only gets good at True Supporter. Janitor AI is the best free home for long text stories, as long as you can live with the occasional outage. CrushOn is the cheapest route to 16K memory, and SillyTavern is the answer if you never want a company to decide what happens to your chats again. If you only ever talked to one character, try Kindroid or Nomi instead. Chai and Talkie won’t fix the problem you’re leaving over.
Whatever you choose, request your Character.AI export before the December sale, start on a free tier, and pay monthly before you commit to a year. Those are our picks for Character AI alternatives in November 2026.
